Professor Dr. Md. Salim Shakur is a preeminent figure in the field of pediatrics, whose distinguished career spans over four decades of clinical excellence, pioneering research, and transformative medical authorship. A 1979 graduate of Dhaka Medical College, Professor Shakur’s journey is marked by an unwavering commitment to the advancement of child health in Bangladesh and beyond.

Academic Excellence & International Recognition
Professor Shakur spent his formative years gaining specialized expertise across the United Kingdom and Ireland, training at world-renowned institutions in Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Dublin. His academic portfolio is extraordinary; he holds the rare distinction of being the first Bangladeshi to be honored with the FRCPCH (UK) from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. Furthermore, he was conferred Fellowships (FRCP) from the Royal Colleges of Physicians in London, Edinburgh, and Glasgow—a testament to his standing in the global medical community.




Pioneering Research & Leadership
In 2000, Professor Shakur was awarded a PhD from Dhaka University for his groundbreaking research on nutrition and zinc—work that has fundamentally influenced the treatment of pediatric digestive and nutritional disorders. With over 40 research papers published in esteemed international journals, his contributions have provided a vital blueprint for addressing child health challenges in developing nations.
His leadership has been equally impactful. Professor Shakur served as the Director of Dhaka Shishu Hospital and the Academic Director of the Bangladesh Institute of Child Health. Throughout his tenure, he headed the Department of Nutrition and Gastroenterology, mentoring a generation of physicians and shaping the institutional standards of pediatric care in the country.
A Legacy in Medical Literature
Beyond the clinic, Professor Shakur is a celebrated author of essential medical literature. His seminal work, Shakur’s Illustrated Textbook of Paediatrics (2014), alongside titles such as Current Neonatal Practice and Current Essential Paediatrics, has become the gold standard for medical students and practitioners. These texts are lauded for their depth, clinical clarity, and relevance to modern medical education.
Current Practice
Currently, Professor Shakur continues his legacy of service as a Senior Consultant in Pediatrics at United Hospital, Dhaka, where he remains dedicated to providing world-class healthcare to the children of Bangladesh.
